The filmmaker's bold critique tackles the oppressive nature of female beauty and the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Presence Film
Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities in this clever supernatural story captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame via this autobiographical spoof. Hired by government spies to spy on the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest stands strong even without a sequel. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has rendered the youth on edge. When Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. But the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices providing assistance, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, late evening, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Chastain achieves to show the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
